Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is a benign enlargement of the breast gland in men, which can affect one or both breasts. This condition can lead to significant aesthetic and psychological distress. The causes of gynecomastia are varied and include hormonal imbalances, certain medications, underlying diseases, or idiopathic factors, meaning without an identifiable cause.
Corrective surgery for gynecomastia aims to restore normal anatomy by reducing breast volume. Commonly used surgical techniques include:
• Liposuction: removal of excess fatty tissue by suction.
• Surgical excision: removal of excess glandular tissue, often performed through a discreet incision at the areola.
In some cases, these two techniques are combined to achieve optimal results. The procedure is generally performed under general anesthesia and lasts between 1 and 2 hours. Most patients can resume their professional activities after a rest period ranging from 2 to 8 days. Wearing a compression garment is required for 2 to 4 weeks.
Post-operative complications are rare but may include healing disorders, hematomas, or changes in sensitivity in the operated area. It is essential to follow medical recommendations to minimize these risks.
Before deciding on surgery, it is recommended to consult a specialist to assess the appropriateness of the operation and discuss therapeutic options suitable for your situation.
